Edward has joined Leicester South MP, Jon Ashworth, at Leicester Cathedral to be briefed on the latest progress in the Leicester Cathedral Revealed project by the Dean of Leicester and the project team.
At the time of the Cathedral first submitting its bid for funding to the Heritage Lottery Fund at the end of 2016 for its £11.3 million restoration and renewal project, Edward was one of seven local MPs who signed a joint letter of support, co-ordinated by Jon as the Cathedral’s MP. This cross-party support brought together city and county MPs, and Conservative and Labour, to jointly press for the funding needed. Following the success of that bid, and significant progress in developing and consulting on plans, the visit offered an opportunity for Edward and Jon to be brought up to date with developments and the next steps in this exciting project.
Edward said: “Leicester Cathedral, and its work, has a vitally important place in the life of our city and our county. I am proud to continue to work with the team at the Cathedral and fellow MPs to support the Leicester Cathedral Revealed project which will play a central role in helping to make the Cathedral accessible to an ever larger group of local people as well as those who visit our county, and will help this historic building continue to meet the needs of our community for many more decades to come.”
