After the energetic and high profile community and parliamentary campaign to get NHS England to think again about its proposals to stop children's heart surgery at Glenfield, the NHS England Board has listened and announced that it has decided to keep children’s heart surgery in Leicester.
While NHS England has said they will want evidence the milestones and standards set out will be achieved, this is great news for Glenfield Hospital, for patients and their families, and for our communities across the county and wider East Midlands.
Edward welcomed the news saying: "This is fantastic news, and it is clearly the right decision. I have been proud to have actively supported the campaign to keep children's heart surgery at Glenfield Hospital, and I believe this sensible decision reflects the fantastic work the team at Glenfield do, and the clinical outcomes they achieve.
I also want to pay tribute to patients and their families, the Hospitals Trust and medical professionals, MPs of all Parties, and particularly Liz Kendall MP in whose seat the hospital is and who has led the cross-Party campaign, and the community as a whole - everyone has come together to campaign so successfully to save this vitally important, and hugely valued service."
