Edward has met with the UK's eating disorder charity, Beat, to discuss the importance of swift, early, access to intervention, and the support service the charity provides. Following the meeting Edward added his support to Beat's calls for a focus on early intervention.
Eating disorders are estimated to affect c. 1.25 million people in the UK, and can affect anyone - people of any age, gender, or background. Tragically eating disorders can have a high mortality rate, but recovery is possible, with the right treatment and support. Edward discussed with the team from Beat their hugely important reports, 'Delaying for years, denied for months' published a few years ago, and their recent report 'No place like home', both of which cast a powerful light on the impact of delayed treatment for people with eating disorders and their families, and how things can be improved.
Edward said: "It was a pleasure to meet up with the team for Beat once again, to discuss the impact of eating disorders, and the importance of early intervention and access to support in helping people recover from an eating disorder, as well as to congratulate them on the fantastic work they do. With well over a million people up and down the country affected by eating disorders, including people in our own local communities in Melton and Syston, I am calling for a renewed focus on improving timely access to the treatment and support that people with eating disorders need, and which, ultimately, saves lives."
