Edward has addressed a packed marketplace in Melton Mowbray at the 'Farmers' Rally', setting out his backing for our local farmers, and calling on the Government to scrap their changes to Agricultural Property Relief, the 'family farm tax'.
The rally was organised by Midlands Farmers who were set up by local farmer, Cllr Simon Orson, and others, to give our local farmers a voice in challenging the Government's decision to impose a 'family farm tax' with its changes to Agricultural Property Relief, and on the broader challenges facing local farmers. The event, in Melton's market place, was very well attended by people from the town and villages, but also further afield and from the local and national media, filling the market place to hear, not just from Edward as Melton's local MP, but much more importantly from Simon and other farmers who spoke powerfully and movingly about the impact the Government's decision will have on them and their families, and the pressures on farming more widely.
Edward said: "Its time the Prime Minister and Chancellor listened to our farmers, think again, and scrap the 'family farm tax'. Our local farmers have my support, and judging by the huge turn-out at the event in Melton they have the overwhelming support of local people - I will continue standing up for them, and want to pay tribute to Simon Orson and all those involved in organising the fantastic event in Melton that sent a clear message to this out of touch Labour Government."
