Edward has joined fellow MPs across all Parties at an event in Parliament to belatedly mark Carers Week 2024, which was rescheduled as the originally planned event in Carers Week itself fell during the General Election period. The very well-attended event brought together Carers UK, Age UK, Carers Trust, Oxfam GB, the ME Association, the MND Association, Rethink Mental Illness, and The Lewy Body Society.
The event provided an opportunity to speak to unpaid carers about the amazing work they do up and down the country, and in our own communities here in Melton and Syston, which all too often goes unseen. Edward discussed with the carers and organisations how unpaid carers can be better identified and recognised, and the support that they need.
Commenting, Edward said: “ Unpaid carers in Melton and Syston provide vital support to family members and friends, often without any respite break or proper support for themselves. The value of the care they provide is huge, with c. 5.7 million people estimated to be providing unpaid care across the UK. It is hugely important their efforts are properly recognised and that they get the help they need to stay well themselves, and in turn care safely and well for their loved ones. In the months ahead I look forward to working with the organisations represented at the event.”
