Edward has met with James Haddon, from our local National Farmer's Union in Melton, ahead of the NFU's Back British Farming Day, to discuss with him the hugely important role farming plays in our local and national economy, in providing food security to our nation, in putting top quality food on the table, and in the role our farmers play in protecting and enhancing our countryside.
They discussed the challenges facing our farming community at the current time, from weather conditions this year, to the impact of regulation on farming, challenges with how the support payments for farming operate, to rural crime and how to tackle it, and the impact of fuel, fertiliser, feed and other costs on agriculture.
Edward said: “It was not only a pleasure to catch up with James, and for him to be able to update me on local NFU priorities and NFU members' views, but hugely useful. I look forward to further regular meetings with James and our local NFU, and local farmers, in the months ahead to help champion their needs, and ensure their voices are heard.”
