Edward has joined campaigners from Cancer Research UK at an event in Parliament to mark World Cancer Day 2024, and to talk with them about how to build on the progress of recent years, and further improve cancer survival rates in the UK.
In the UK, nearly 1 in 2 people will get cancer in their lifetime, and while incredible progress has been made in the fight against cancer, and survival in the UK has doubled in the last 50 years, there is still more that can be done to drive those survival rates even higher. World Cancer Day is marked internationally every year to help inspire individuals and communities to unite against the disease, and the event hosted by Cancer Research UK in Parliament gave an opportunity for Edward to meet with the CRUK team to talk about how to speed up progress in preventing, diagnosing, and treating the disease, as well as the ground-breaking research projects currently underway as part of the work to ensure more people survive cancer, and beat the disease.
Edward said: "As a former Health Minister, I continue to take a very close interest in the fight against cancer, both in the treatment and support for people with the disease, but also crucially the amazing research being undertaken to find new treatments, and new ways to beat cancer and further boost survival rates. While around 1 in 2 of us will get cancer at some point in our lives, and we probably all know someone who has had the disease, the power of science and research means that more and more people are surviving cancer. But we need to keep up the pace, so it was fantastic, as always, to meet the team from Cancer Research UK to hear about the latest developments and what more can be done to give even more people in our communities an even better chance of beating cancer."
