Edward has visited Leicester Cathedral to catch up with the project team undertaking the major renovation works to the cathedral as part of the Leicester Cathedral Revealed project, and to get an update on progress.
Leicester Cathedral Revealed is a multi-year programme of major works to the cathedral, aiming to complete in 2023, which will restore and improve the cathedral, including restoration of the stonework, walls, and ceilings; install a new stone floor that is level throughout improving accessibility; and the creation of a new exhibition and Heritage Learning Centre, with learning spaces for children, and modern amenities for the cathedral. The ambitious multi-million pound project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and many other charitable trusts and individual donors.
Edward said: “It has been a few years since the then Dean, David Monteith, told me about the ambitious plans for the cathedral, and since Leicester South MP, Jon Ashworth, and I visited to hear about the plans and sent a joint letter to the Heritage Lottery Fund supporting the cathedral’s funding bid, so it was great to step behind the hoardings and scaffolding to get a progress update from Simon Bentley, the project director.
The cathedral plays a central role in our city and county’s religious, but also community and cultural, life so this important project will play a central role in further enhancing the cathedral’s role as a place for everyone to enjoy, and to use, whether for worship, learning, understand our area’s history, or as a focal point for the community. I congratulate the project team on the amazing progress they have made, and look forward to seeing the restored and renovated cathedral ‘revealed’ when the work is completed.”
