West Leicestershire NHS Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) has given Age UK a two year contract to continue providing dementia day care services for local people at its Birstall Day Care Centre, following a campaign by Age UK, Edward, and local people, after funding for these important local services was threatened last year.
In 2016 the CCG had contacted Age UK to tell them that their funding would be cut for the services, meaning the Centre was at risk of closure, and Edward, Age UK, and local people fought to get them to think again. The CCG have done that, and their recent decision means dementia day care services in Birstall are safe for at least another two years.
Edward said: "I am really pleased that the CCG has listened to our campaign and welcome their decision to give Age UK this two year contract for these vital dementia day care services in Birstall. I have visited the centre and seen for myself how important this service is to people with dementia and those who care for them, and I pay tribute to Tony Dononvan of Age UK and his team in Birstall for the great work they do. This decision is great news, and means the service can continue helping and supporting local people."
