Following pressure from Edward and other MPs, the Labour Government agreed to a debate and vote in Parliament on its decision to cut the Winter Fuel Allowance from pensioners across our community, and across the country. In the vote, Edward voted to oppose the Government’s plans, and to try to block the Labour Government from taking the Winter Fuel Allowance away from so many pensioners who rely on it to keep warm. Sadly, with the huge majority of MPs the Government has following the elected, those, like Edward, who were opposed to the cuts were out-voted by Labour MPs, who backed the cuts, so the Government is pressing ahead with its plans.
Edward said: “I’ve always been clear that I believe the new Labour Government has made the wrong choice, and a cruel choice, in taking this much needed fuel allowance away from pensioners who rely on it to keep warm during the winter. I voted against these cuts, and, although we lost the vote, I will continue to press the Government to stop and rethink this unnecessary and damaging policy. I will continue to stand up for our pensioners, as Melton & Syston’s local MP, and nationally.”
