Mountsorrel has remembered the 1918 Armistice, and the sacrifice made by so many local people in World War I, with a community event which saw year 6 pupils from Christ Church & St Peters Primary join local Mountsorrel MPs, Edward and Nicky Morgan, in Mountsorrel’s Peace Garden for an act of remembrance organised by the Royal British Legion.
Edward and Nicky, helped by some of the children, planted trees in the garden to commemorate the centenary, amongst markers for each of the local people who had died in the two world wars, each one with the individual’s life story on it. Local pupils had also painted poppy petals on stones for the Peace Garden to mark the occasion.
Edward commented: “It is right that, 100 years on from the 1918 Armistice that ended the First World War, we remember the huge sacrifices made in that conflict and more recent conflicts, including by local people in Mountsorrel. The service and tree-planting was very moving, particularly as it brought together representatives of all generations in the village.”
