Mountsorrel Quarry, operated by Lafarge Tarmac Ltd and located between Mountsorrel and Quorn on the border of the Charnwood and Loughborough constituencies gave Edward an insight in to its operation this month, when he went on a tour of the quarry and its processing plant, accompanied by senior executives from the business who discussed with him Tarmac's plans for the extension of the quarry and the strong relationship the company and quarry management have built with the local community, supporting a range of community projects.
Mountsorrel is a granite quarry supplying granite to construction projects driving growth across Leicestershire and the East Midlands, and is an important local employer, with almost 150 workers, almost all of whom are skilled local people.
Edward commented on his visit saying: "The visit to Mountsorrel Quarry gave me a real insight in to the complex day-to-day operations of this important local employer. In seeing the different parts of the quarry's operation, and in discussions with senior executives, Tarmac's commitment to the local community in Mountsorrel and the surrounding area was clear, as was its determination to safeguard local jobs through its expansion plans. Not only is the quarry a major supplier of granite to the infrastructure projects around our region that are driving growth and jobs, but the company take a long-term view of their responsibilities to the landscape, and to the surrounding villages, with managers building up strong and trusting relationships with the community."
