Edward has joined hundreds of local people at Remembrance Sunday parades and services in the constituency in Syston and in Mountsorrel, to commemorate Remembrance Day.
As our local community in Charnwood, and our country, come together at services across the UK, the Royal British Legion in its Poppy Appeal this year asked the nation to ‘Rethink Remembrance’ by recognising the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces community, past and present.
While we often think of the Poppy Appeal in connection with its origins after the First World War, and the poppies of the Flanders fields, it also makes us pause and reflect on the many conflicts since, and those who today continue to suffer, including the veterans of recent wars, and their families. The work of the Royal British Legion, & Remembrance Sunday commemorate past wars, but also remind us of the cost of war, and of our debt to all those who fight for both our country and for the values we all hold dear.
Edward said: "It is always incredibly moving to attend the Remembrance Sunday services locally. As I joined other local people to remember at services in Syston and Mountsorrel in my Charnwood constituency, I was struck by the huge numbers of local people, and particularly young people, who had turned out on a very cold day to remember, to show our gratitude and to recognise the huge debt we owe those who have fought for our country, and those who serve in our Armed Forces today.
I also want to pay tribute to the work of the Royal British Legion, and particularly all their supporters locally who have done so much to organise the acts of remembrance and parades we have seen in the towns and villages across our county. At this time it is important that we all pause, reflect, and continue to give generously to the Poppy Appeal and Royal British Legion to help support those who have served."
