Edward, along with local Borough Councillor Robert Child, has met with Burton Lazars residents in the village hall to discuss the impact on local people, and on bookings of the village hall, of the temporary closure of the A606 through the village to allow the construction of a new roundabout as part of the Melton Mowbray Distributor Road (MMDR) works.
While the current temporary closure, following another temporary closure earlier in the year, is necessary to allow for the safe construction of the roundabout that will form part of the MMDR (North & East sections), it has impacted on the village both in terms of access & public transport routes, but also on things like bookings of the village hall, which are essential to its income to cover its running costs.
Edward said: “It was very good to meet local residents and the fantastic team behind the village hall in Burton Lazars to hear about the impact on the village of the temporary closure of the A606 while construction work takes place. While I recognise the construction works are entirely necessary, I am concerned about some of the impacts on Burton Lazars, and I will be calling on the County Council to do what it can to support local institutions, like the village hall, run by volunteers, that have been impacted by the temporary closure.”
