Edward has joined local farmers from Melton and Syston at the Farming Rally in Whitehall in Westminster to show his support for our local Leicestershire farmers.
The rally saw thousands come to central London, with numbers massively exceeding predictions, to draw attention to the pressures being faced by farmers and farming, and to protest against the new Labour Government’s decision to change the Agricultural Property Relief rules, effectively imposing a ‘family farm tax’ on large numbers of family farms when they are passed from generation to generation.
Edward said: “Farming and farmers are at the heart of our rural communities in Melton and Syston, and across the country. This massively well-attended rally highlights the hugely damaging impact the budget's 'family farm tax' will have on farmers, food security, and our countryside. As the MP for Melton Mowbray, the Rural Capital of Food, it was a privilege to meet up with Simon Orson, one of our local farmers, who helped organise many local farmers coming to London, to show my support for our farmers. I hope that the new Government have the decency to listen - I'm standing with our farmers, for our food security, and calling for the family farm tax to be scrapped."
